A holiday to write home about
Stories connect facts. Why a storyline is indispensable in strategy formulation.

The holiday season has arrived again, and books are packed in the suitcase. Books about facts, but also with stories. Stories provide insight, based on a "course of events".
In his interesting book "Nexus", Yuval Harari calls stories "the oldest form of information technology". We humans are apparently wired in such a way that we remember storylines more easily than isolated facts. Not least because stories also establish connections between facts.
Recently, I visited an investment firm that has the history of all its portfolio companies documented by a well-known Dutch novelist. Not only a wonderful sign of commitment, but also a great way to record, share, and learn from the life cycle of the company. How did the company originate? What went well? What went wrong? What fit? What didn't?
It is a misconception that only the future is relevant in strategy formulation. As if you would hire a job applicant based solely on their outline of the future. Without first having a good look at the CV. Creating a storyline is therefore also part of our unique advisory approach. Of course, a factual account, but with an eye for connections. About the developments in the industry, the company, and how both developed. From the past, through the present, into the future. With a 360-degree perspective.
Perhaps inspiration for a good conversation with us after the holidays. For now, 4C Value Creation wishes you a pleasant holiday! One to fondly tell stories about….
